I don’t believe in being hidebound by a big contract. But I do recommend things I like. If you buy something through one of these links, it all helps keep the show on the road (or rather, the ocean).

Waterhaul Sunglasses

""

This is a tiny company based in Cornwall and they make their sunglasses (and prescription glasses) out of discarded fishing nets they find washed up on the beach.

Really – when you buy a pair, there is a little card in the box with a QR code telling you when and where the nets were found.

I just think it’s a wonderful idea. The glasses are really good too.

If you use my link below, you’ll get 15% off (and I’ll get a small commission for helping spread the word.)

Starlink ""

This satellite communication system has been a game-changer. Although it pains me to say it, I do not begrudge Elon Musk the fees. If you use this link, we both get a free month:

Wise Financial Services

""

The best way I have found to handle money while moving between different countries. I get £25, and you get a free card or no fees on a transfer of up to £500.

The Alpicool Fridge

""

I have two fridges (yes really). It was an accident – I thought one was broken after landing upside down in the bilge during The Knockdown. It was only when the replacement arrived that I discovered it was only the connection that had broken- and then my cousin Sophie, who is a cook on a superyacht said: “But you must have a salad fridge!”

She’s right: 4°C for beer – 12° for food. The two little fridges haven’t given a moment’s trouble.

The little alcohol camping stove

""

When you have Lithium batteries, placing an induction hob on top of the defunct gas cooker is a great idea – but there are days when the sun doesn’t shine, and the wind doesn’t blow. For those occasions, this is what you need. I’ve written at length about it here: https://racecoast.net/omstest/the-little-alcohol-camping-stove

Crusader Sails ""

Paul Lees at Crusader has made all my sails since 1986, and I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. https://crusadersails.com/

A R Peachment – agents for Nanni Diesel Engines.

Samsara came with a Nanni 21hp when I bought her. After nine years, I had abused it so badly that I cracked the block – couldn’t cure the overheating (check the exhaust elbow). The new version is a revelation – and so economical. https://peachment.co.uk/

Mine is six years old at the time of writing and has never given a moment’s trouble. The support anywhere in the world is outstanding.

Pantaenius Insurance

Being regulated by the Financial Services Authority, Pantaenius do not reward me for recommending them, but they have handled my yacht insurance since 1987. Then, they were a small company based in Hamburg, but the only one in the world that would insure a boat for the Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. Deciding to do that was probably the best decision ever made by any insurance company. Now they are the undisputed market leader.

When I lost Lottie Warren 80 miles north of the Shetlands in 2000, during the UK’s worst summer storm since records began, the claims department was on the phone within the week, nagging me to fill out the form. £35,000 arrived a few days later (we spent it on hardwood flooring, a Cornish Shrimper and a holiday in Alderney).

I think they’re so good, I’m including them here anyway: https://www.pantaenius.com/
